National Poetry Month
The month of April is National Poetry Month. National Poetry Month is when schools, publishers, libraries, and poets come together to celebrate poetry and it’s creative nature and culture. Since 1996, thousands of organizations across the country host and participate through readings, festivals, workshops and more. Below are some of the poems we are using at Charter West to celebrate National Poetry Month and how the students reacted to them.
“The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe, is a symbolic narrative poem where a man heard a tap at his door while he was half asleep trying to get over his lost love Lenore. The tapping was merely a Raven, and the man’s natural instinct was to talk to it. As he asked questions the Raven only would answer “Nevermore.” He continued to ask questions, each getting more personal, but the Raven’s vocabulary was limited to “nevermore.” Please click on the title to read the full poem.
“The Highwayman” By Alfred Noyes is a narrative poem about a robber on his way to see his girlfriend Bess after a robbery. The next day soldiers show up instead of the highwayman and they tie her up with a gun to her chest waiting for the highwayman to come back. He takes her life in order to warn him but when he tries to get away it does not work. Please click on the title to read the full poem.
“The Fable” by Ralph Aldo Emerson is a narrative poem about a squirrel and a mountain that fight about space. Please click on the title to read the full poem

PPCMS-West Wins Award from Florida Department of Education
PPCMS-W does it again! National Blue Ribbon and School of Excellence has been our past passion. On Tuesday, April 1, 2014, it was no April Fool’s joke! Dr. Michael Olson, a representative from the Florida Department of Education School Of Choice Office presented Ms. Flowers, Mr. Castellano and our leadership team an award for being chosen the top three out of 144 schools as an exemplar school. This means that our teaching and learning is above and beyond – so much so that the Department of Education would like to tape some of our classes and showcase it to the entire state on how to implement the Florida State Standards! The other two schools that will be a part of this are the Aventura City of Excellence and the Tallahassee School of Arts and Sciences. When asked why our school was chosen, Dr. Olson said immediately, “Student engagement. It is clear that students express themselves and are participating in class.” Thanks, Dr. Olson, and expect to see a professional television crew on our campus in May 2014 so that we can share what we know!
