We Coded, Did You?
December 8 - 12 was the week for the Hour of Code. Our students participated in a Video Chat with celebrity Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. Students stayed after hours and our class was invited to ask questions. 8th Grader Maria Lakdawalla asked Ms. Sandberg, "Why do you think it's important for girls to study code and computer science?" Ms. Sandberg, who is world renowned for her outstanding contributions to women's rights and the author of the best seller Lean In, was happy to share her strong feelings about encouraging both boys and girls to strengthen their math, computer and science skills so that we may competitively serve a technology-rich future. "It was wonderful to meet with such a great role model who is so generous with her time and comfortable with her position." an remarked PPCMSW 8th grader Jasmine Perez. Ms. Finklestein, the coordinator of the Hour of Code, gave out stickers to student participants and hopes to make this a school wide activity next year. PPCMS Wins Top Scores In FCAT Writing!
Pines Charter Middle has consistently received first place in Broward County in the FCAT Science, Reading, Writing and Math. Once again, we were first in Science and we tied with Driftwood Middle School for first place in the very last FCAT Writes. It was a clean sweep for Reading in grades 6-8, and Math was first in 6th and 8th (7th placed 2nd in the county). Outstanding, PPCMS!!
PPCMS-W does it again! On Tuesday, April 1, 2014, Dr. Michael Olson, a representative from the Florida Department of Education School Of Choice Office, presented Ms. Flowers, Mr. Castellano and our entire leadership team an award for being chosen to be among the top three out of 144 schools as an exemplary school. This means that our teaching and learning are above and beyond – so much so that the Department of Education would like to tape some of our classes and showcase them to the entire state on how to implement the Florida State Standards! The Aventura City of Excellence and the Tallahassee School of Arts and Sciences were the other two school selected. When asked why our school was chosen, Dr. Olson said immediately, “Student engagement. It is clear that students express themselves and are participating in class.” Thanks, Dr. Olson! A professional television crew visited our campus in May 2014 and we are anxiously awaiting our debut on the state website!

PPCMS is very proud to announce that we are now a Cambridge International Secondary 1 School. This is an engaging, accelerated, academic experience for highly motivated learners aged 11-14. It is an internationally-renowned program that prepares students to think critically, communicate clearly and establish well-reasoned arguments. Students will increase their comprehension of global issues with multiple perspectives. Eligible eighth graders in the fall of 2014 have been enrolled in Language Arts and Science Cambridge Classes. Aligned curriculum and enriching field trips will make this a challenging experience for our curious students. For more information, pick up a brochure here at school or contact our Cambridge Coordinator, Ms. Léger, at (954) 443-4847 or via email.
